Rosella Moritz

Rosella E. Moritz, 95, of Liberty, Mo., a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away April 19, 2015 at Excelsior Springs Nursing and Rehab, Excelsior Springs, Mo.

Rosella was born July 5, 1919 in Hallock, Minn., the daughter of Swan Martin and Hattie (Anderson) Ecklund. Her early years were spent in the Hallock community. Swedish was spoken in the home, so when she started school she could not speak English. She attended the Northwest School of Agriculture in Crookston, Minn., and was a member of the graduating class of 1936.

On November 26, 1942, Rosella married Orville Moritz in Hallock, Minn. They settled on the Moritz family farm near Kennedy, Minn., where they farmed the land together and rebuilt the barn that was destroyed by a tornado. In 1951 they moved to Liberty where Orville found work cleaning up and rebuilding the Kansas City community following the Kaw River flood. He later owned and operated the O.H. Moritz “Swede” Construction Company for over 40 years.

Rosella spent all her working years caring for elderly people in their homes, not retiring until she was in her seventies. She had a lifelong interest in history and collected and preserved many articles and items of interest in scrapbooks. She was the “keeper of the scrapbook” for the Liberty Christian Church for many years. She, along with her very dear friend, Marie Osborn, taught the kindergarten Sunday school class at the Liberty Christian Church for 43 years. In her later years she remained active working in her yard, painting birdhouses, and pursuing her special gift and passion of making quilts for family and friends.

Rosella was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Orville in 2001; her sister, Anna Mae Blade; along with three brothers, Marvin, Howard and Douglas Ecklund.

She is survived by her two children, Darrell Moritz and wife, Teresa of Lathrop, Mo., and Kathleen Burris and husband, Jim of Brookfield, Mo.; grandchildren, Tammy Hopkins, Mendy Stout, Rebecca (Chad) Cantrall, Matthew (Tiffany) Burris, Kyla (Adam) Barcus, Genessa (Daniel) Kelley and Chad Moritz; 15 great-grandchildren; sister, Camilla Johnson of Hopkins, Minn.; sister-in-law, Jean Somers of Maple Grove, Minn.; along with many nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service celebrating her life will be held at Fry-Bross & Spidle Funeral Home, 208 S. Jefferson, Kearney, Mo. at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 25, 2015. Family will receive friends one hour prior, at the funeral home. Burial following at Glenridge Cemetery, Liberty, Mo. Memorial contributions are suggested to Kansas City Hospice.

A special thank you to Dr. John Barth D.O. , the entire staff of Westbrook Care Center for their loving and compassionate care of Mom this past year, Excelsior Springs Nursing and Rehab facility, and the nursing staff of Kansas City Hospice. Rosella is loved and will be missed by all family and friends who touched her kind, caring and loving spirit.
