Susan D Porter, 101, passed away on January 8, 2018. Susan was born on January 26, 1916 in rural Orrick, Missouri to Eliza and Benton Clevenger.
Her siblings, Homer Clevenger (Helen), Maggie Easley (Bill), Pearl Wiley (Joe), Bill Clevenger (Helen), along with her husband, John Porter (1977) and son, Rex Porter (2012), preceded her in death.
Sue was a beautician until she met the love of her life, John, and they were married in 1938. She and John made their home on a farm near Kearney, Missouri and started their family. Three children were born of this union, Rex Porter (Cheri), Kay Shepherd (Larry), and Beth Crowley (Greg). Sue remained on her farm until she was 98 and was an active farmer and gardener during her 73 years there. Sue was a member of the Kearney United Methodist Church and loved her Merry Martha’s United Methodist Women. She enjoyed china painting and playing hours of bridge with her many, many friends. Sue read the Kansas City Star from cover to cover and worked the crossword each day. Her eight grandchildren, Todd Shepherd (Vicki), Jill Poague (Kevin), Julie Brown (Eddie), Kari Swezy (Scott), Bridget Robinson (Brian), Kristin Hennenfent (Joel), Laura Coy (Greg), and Katie Crowley, 15 great-grandchildren, as well as nieces and nephews, will remember fondly the wonderful vegetable-filled dinners, rolls, and apple dumplings served at Granny’s table on the farm.
A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, January 14, 2018 at Kearney Methodist Church. The visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. and services will immediately follow. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the American Cancer Society in honor of Sue’s loved ones who preceded her in death.
Arrangements are in the care of Fry-Bross & Spidle Funeral Home, Kearney, Mo.
