1933 – 2017
Lawrence “Larry” Lee Mitchell passed into the loving arms of our Lord and Savior on Thursday, December 7, 2017.
Lawrence was the first born to Lee and Thelma Mitchell of Kansas City, Mo. Lawrence graduated from North Kansas City High School in 1951. He joined the Navy and served in the Korean War. On April 8, 1961, he married the love of his life, Mary “Betty” Fulkerson and they were happily married for 56 years. After serving in the Navy he became employed as an FAA air traffic control specialist until 1985 when he retired, but even after retirement he continued to work as a volunteer at St. Francis de Sales Church in Las Vegas, Nev. In his spare time, which wasn’t much, he enjoyed traveling, fishing, cooking, volunteering, and spending time with his family and friends.
Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents, Lee Mitchell and Thelma Gann.
He is survived by his wife, Mary “Betty” Mitchell of the home in Lawson; son, Mark Mitchell of Missouri; son, Gary Mitchell of Arizona; son, Lawrence “Doug” Mitchell and his wife, Lillian of Nevada; daughters, Karen Dawson and Sharon Mitchell, both of Nevada; grandchildren, Bonnie and Brian Olson of Missouri, Cristy and Lance Newell of Oklahoma, and Erik Galvan of Nevada; as well as four great grandchildren, Ian and Elise Newell and Bryan Jr. and Madison Olson; one brother and three sisters, numerous nieces and nephews, extended family and special friends.
Visitation will be at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Excelsior Springs, Mo., on Friday, March 23, 2018 at 10 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m., presided by Father Mike Roach. Burial will be at Higginsville Veteran’s Cemetery in Higginsville, Mo.
