Terrance Lee Harlow

Terry Harlow, 75, of Kearney, Mo., passed away Saturday, September 8, 2018 at North Kansas City Hospital. He was a loving Son, Brother, Husband, Father, Uncle, Grandfather, and Great-Grandfather.

Terry was born in Kansas City, Mo., June 24, 1943, but grew up in Gallatin, Mo.  He graduated from high school in 1961.

In May 1962 he joined the Air Force and worked K-9, training the Air Force dogs in the 78th Air Police Squadron at Hamilton AFB in California. His first K-9 was named Lancer, then he was assigned to Buster. He and Buster were together until Terry was discharged from Hamilton Air Force Base in January 1966.

After the Air Force, Terry was hired by the Kansas City, Mo., Police Department where he proudly served for 25 years protecting the streets of KC. It was in the early part of his career with the PD he met Brenda, who later became his wife, his soul mate and lifelong partner of more than 45 years.

They enjoyed a wonderful life together, having a daughter and a son. They spent many summers at the lake with family and friends and neighborhood kids tagging along. Terry also enjoyed taking these same neighborhood kids flying in his airplane. As a private pilot he had owned several airplanes, along with motorcycles, boats and many other toys over the years. Often times his family could be found at the airport where he kept their plane, doing touch and goes in their airplane while others were riding 4-wheelers on the ground and having a picnic.

Terry would enjoy laughing and talking about the many crazy calls he made while on the job as an officer. After retiring from the PD he and Brenda opened an embroidery business and moved to Kearney, Mo.

Then in 2003 he began driving over the road for Star Transport and continued for the next 10 years.

He enjoyed reading and had acquired quite a library of books, most all of which he read more than once. He very much loved animals of all kinds, but he especially loved dogs. His missed his family dogs while he was in the hospital, he couldn’t wait to get home to see them. Terry enjoyed life, he had an infectious laugh, and a winning smile that made him easy to like and fun to be around. He inherited a love of music that grew and matured as the years went by.

He is survived by his wife, Brenda of the home; daughter, Terra L. Squire of Kansas City, Mo.; son, Brian K. Harlow of Liberty, Mo.; daughter, Vanessa S. and husband, Mike Tompkins of Petaluma, Calif.; brother, Ron Harlow and wife, Sandra of Kearney, Mo.; brother, Jim Harlow and wife, Gail of Kansas City, Mo.; 13 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by both parents, Virginia and Van Harlow, a sister who died at birth, maternal grandparents, Gladys and Otis Grogg, and paternal grandparents, Murl and Luther Harlow, all of Gallatin, Mo.

Visitation/Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 p.m., October 4, 2018 at Noah’s Ark Airport, 7620 NW River Road, Waldron, Mo. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Wayside Waifs in Terry’s name.

Our Sincere Condolences

I am very sorry to hear of your illness and passing. May God bless your family in your absence. I wish we had been better at communicating after we met. Till we meet again in the next life, God bless you.
