Edel Naduma Flewelling

Edel Naduma Flewelling, 68, passed away Friday, September 1, 2023, after a five-year battle with lung cancer.

Edel was born April 19, 1955, to Maria A. DelReal and Bruno O. Naduma, in Cebu City, Cebu, Philippines. Edel was the eldest of four daughters. She was very determined to finish school even with minimal resources. Her family saved their money and sold vegetables from their garden to send their eldest daughter to school. She finished her studies with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Velez College of Nursing and was part of the first group of nursing from the Philippines to travel to the United States to work. She landed in Kansas City with a group of nurses in April 1979.

After moving to the U.S., she worked at Truman Medical Center and then later Centerpoint Medical Center, where she met and made many lifelong friends. She bravely left her family in the Philippines for the United States for more opportunities to provide for and support her parents and her three sisters. Her courage proved fruitful because her sisters, as well as her nieces and nephews, were provided the resources to pursue and finish their studies to become successful professionals in their fields.

Edel leaves behind her husband of 36 years, Ronald R. Flewelling; daughter, Jade (Nate) Williams; granddaughters, Amiah, Caroline, and Cecelia. She loved and adored her granddaughters, and they will forever remember the fun and special times with their Lola.

A visitation will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. at Bross & Spidle Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs, Missouri, with services immediately following on Friday, September 8, 2023.
