James “Jim” Lanier Barber, 80, of Independence, MO, passed away on April 20, 2024, after fighting metastatic pancreatic cancer.
Jim was born on August 22, 1943 to George Barber and De’Arley Montague Barber in Farragut, Idaho. In 1990, Jim married Rhonda, the love of his life, and they lived happily together until his final breath.
Jim was a devoted husband, father, Pappy and friend. Having grown up in Alaska, in his youth Jim was an avid hunter, fisherman, hiker and mountain climber. He had an early passion, and later a successful business, of restoring old cars. Later in life he enjoyed reloading ammunition for his hobby of guns. He taught many in this area gun safety and trained them in home defense and instructed them how to get their CCW license. He was always good for a laugh with his ever ending witty responses. He kept his family and friends laughing.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, George and De’Arley Barber; parents-in-law, Larry and Claudia Thompson; younger brother, Victor Barber; daughter, Shannon Marcell; and son, Lawrence Case Jr. “C.J.”
Jim is survived by his wife, Rhonda Barber; sons, Victor (Leslie) Barber and Stirling Barber; daughters, Jennifer Barber, Annaliese Barber and Tiffany Nix; sisters, Deidre Barber (Morris Yarnell) and Aleica Silver (Alan); brothers-in-law, Chip Thompson and Vern (Kathy) Thompson; sister-in-law, Debbie (Les) Barnett; grandsons, Reade and Robert Barber, Cole Marcell and Cody Nygaard; granddaughters, Krysta Nix, Kassidee Valero, and Charise Burke; one great-granddaughter, two great grandsons, 10 nephews, 10 nieces, and one great grandson on the way. And we can’t forget his black non-descript dog, Arrow.
There will be a memorial service held in The Gathering Baptist Church located at 4505 S. Noland Rd., Independence, MO 64055 on May 11, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. Online viewing will be available on YouTube account found at The Gathering Baptist Church@GatheringKC.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations made to Claudia’s Legacy Equipment fund or to the NRA Defense fund, for which he felt strongly.

Well Jim (a.k.a. Butch, Jim Bob and Jimmy), our 40+ years of friendship and comraderie at Lee Data has rewarded us… with laughter, pulling together when some times were tough and a few awesome trips domestic and foreign. I have no doubt we’ll be together again. Love never dies.

I always enjoyed my visits with Jim at the Gun shop. State of the union and new products were at the top of our BS sessions and a few jokes as well. I will miss Jim Barber. God Bless his family for sharing him with us all.
