
Ms. Virginia Lee Gaunt Mathews, age 82, passed away Saturday evening, November 29, 2025 at the University of Kansas Hospital.
She was born on August 20, 1943 in Chillicothe, Missouri, a daughter of the late Duane and Elma Howerton Gaunt.
Virginia was preceded in death by one grandson, Kenneth Hunter Sapp-Hamilton; one daughter, Susan Mathews Mellon; two brothers, Robert Gaunt and Russell Gaunt; two sisters, Barbara Gaunt Vaughn and Loretta Gaunt Ritchie.
She was a member of the United Christian-Presbyterian Church and had a 40 year long career as a barber in Liberty, Missouri. She enjoyed dancing; square dancing, tap dancing, and country western dancing; riding horses, gardening and spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grand children.
Virginia is survived by two sons and two daughters-in-law, Danny Dean Mathews (Angela) of Lawson, Missouri, and Gary Shane Mathews (Chryz) of Kearney, Missouri; one daughter, Madonna Mathews Tyler (Stephen) of Kansas City, Missouri; 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Wanda Gaunt Love of Richmond, Missouri. She also leaves many other family members and friends who will miss her greatly.
Celebration of Life will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Friday, December 5, 2025 at United Christian-Presbyterian Church in Lawson, Missouri.
Mom was a strong, determined and fiercely independent woman. We will miss her every day.
