Sylvia Odema Harms

4/28/35 – 3/13/26
Sylvia Harms, age 90, died peacefully and in her home on March 13, 2026. Sylvia was vivacious, had a keen sense of humor, and adored her grandchildren (9), great grandchildren (17), and one great-great grandchild. She had a winning smile and genuinely cared for all family and friends.
Sylvia became a single parent of four at the age of 30 when her husband, Gordon Harms, age 33, was killed by a drunk driver. Sylvia never married but accomplished going back to college and focused on raising her children and being active in church. She worked as a bookkeeper, secretary, and office manager. She valued her relationship with God and strove to be a good Christian example. She was an avid reader until her eye gave out (she read up to 10 books per week).
Sylvia had two brothers who preceded her in death, James Bryant and Leroy Bryant. Her daughter, Carolyn preceded her in death 19 years ago.
She has three surviving children, Kathy (Betty Weger), Barry (Joy Hunt), and Brian.
The family is having a Celebration of Life service at Bethel United Church of Christ, 4900 NE Parvin Rd., KCMO 64117, on April 25, 2026 at 11 AM. No flowers please. Donations may be made to Bethel United Church of Christ for their “diaper drive”.
Arrangements are in care of Bross & Spidle Funeral Home, Excelsior Springs.
