September 19, 1959 – August 24, 2026<\/em><\/p>\n

Lawrence Alan “Larry” Swoboda, 66, passed away unexpectedly at his home in Kearney, Missouri, on August 24, 2026.<\/p>\n

Larry was born September 19, 1959, in Excelsior Springs, Missouri, to Alfred and Lois (Trackwell) Swoboda.<\/p>\n

Larry and Kris (Jones) Swoboda were married on December 29, 1989. For nearly 37 years, they shared a life together, raised their two sons, Lucas and Ted, built a home and a family, and collected almost four decades of memories along the way.<\/p>\n

Larry famously hated to fly, which meant every family vacation began with getting in the car. What might have seemed like an inconvenience instead became part of the adventure. Those miles together gave the family experiences they might otherwise have missed – standing among the Great Sand Dunes in Colorado, finding themselves stopped in Yellowstone traffic by a herd of buffalo, hunting for sharks’ teeth on Florida beaches, and even making a drive-by of the Corn Palace in Mitchell, South Dakota. The destinations mattered, but so did everything they saw and experienced together along the way.<\/p>\n

Larry retired in 2024 after 25 years with Jackson County Parks and Recreation. Retirement gave him more time for some of the simple things he loved most – the outdoors, the mountains, and being at home. He especially enjoyed sitting on the screened-in porch, watching the deer, turkey, and birds wander through the yard.<\/p>\n

When he wasn’t enjoying the outdoors, Larry could often be found watching an old Western, a war movie, or just about anything on the History Channel. His fascination with history was something he shared with Lucas and Ted, helping to inspire in both of his sons their own love of all things history.<\/p>\n

There was very little Larry couldn’t fix, renovate, or improve. If something needed to be repaired, chances were good that Larry could figure it out. That ability was matched by his willingness to use it to help others. He was fiercely loyal to his friends and was always quick to lend a hand with whatever they needed.<\/p>\n

Larry was a quiet man, but those who knew him knew to listen closely. Behind his quiet nature was a wonderfully quick wit and a sense of humor that could catch you completely off guard and make you laugh out loud.<\/p>\n

Above everything else, Larry loved his family. He was immensely proud of Lucas and Ted, and there was little he wouldn’t do for his boys or for Kris. Much of Larry’s love was expressed through doing – fixing something, building something, helping with a problem, driving the miles, or simply making sure the people he loved were taken care of. Making his family happy made Larry happy.<\/p>\n

Larry is survived by his wife, Kris (Jones) Swoboda; his sons, Lucas Swoboda and Ted Swoboda; his brother, Michael Swoboda; his sisters, Linda (Swoboda) Uftring and Katharine (Swoboda) Butler; his nieces, Christina (Uftring) Fisk and husband Robert, and Kimberly Uftring; his nephew, Wayne Garrett Butler; and his great-niece, Phoenix Fisk.<\/p>\n

He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Lois (Trackwell) Swoboda.<\/p>\n

Larry will be deeply missed by his family, his friends, and all those fortunate enough to have known his loyalty, generosity, quiet humor, and steady presence. He leaves behind things he built and repaired, people he helped, laughter he unexpectedly caused, interests he passed on to his sons, thousands of miles of family memories, and a family who always knew how very much they were loved.<\/p>\n

A visitation will be held on Friday, September 25, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Church of the Annunciation in Kearney, Missouri. A Funeral Mass celebrating Larry’s life will follow at 11:00 a.m.<\/p>\n

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honor Larry by spending that time and kindness with the people you love. Take someone you love to dinner, put away the distractions, enjoy the conversation, and simply be in the moment. Time together is a gift – treasure it.<\/p>\n
