Arthur M. Hayes

Arthur (Dugan) M. Hayes passed away May 21, 2013 at his home at the age of 101. Arthur was born October 12, 1911 , in East Lynne, Mo., the son of David and Viola Newman Hayes.

A carpenter before becoming a soldier, Arthur entered military service in 1943. He was a glider mechanic and also a glider co-pilot. After glider training, he was sent to the European Theatre of Operations and participated in the Air Offensive Europe, Rhineland, Ardennes, Central Europe, Normandy, Rome-Armor and Northern France. For these campaigns he was awarded Seven Bronze Campaign Stars, Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Theatre Campaign Ribbons and two Overseas Bars. He flew in the four man crew gliders. He was with the 50th troop Carrier Wing of the 9th Air Force. He also worked with the German Prisoners of War in France for a short time. He was discharged on September 26, 1945 . After his military services, he continued his carpentry work.

Arthur married Dorothy Mae Akers. She preceded him in death in 2001. He is survived by his daughter, Janet Weseman and husband, Karl, Kearney, Mo., three granddaughters, and many great-grandchildren.

Arthur was loved by many and will be greatly missed.

Services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 28, 2013 at the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery, Higginsville, Mo. Family will serve as bearers. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the Liberty Hospital Hospice.
