Clarence E. "Junior" King
March 27, 1931 - September 22, 2014

Clarence E. King, Jr., also known as “Junior” King, 83, Kearney, Mo., passed away on Monday, Sept. 22, 2014, surrounded by his family. Clarence was loved, respected and admired by his family and friends.

Clarence was born March 27, 1931. He was reared on a farm near Lawson, Mo., in Ray County. He was educated in the rural and Lawson public schools, graduating from Lawson High School in 1949.

He served with the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. After returning from the Air Force, he continued farming and feeding cattle with his father until 1960. He was married to Norma Ann Parman on Nov. 21, 1953. They have three daughters, June Ann, Jill Kay and Joy Marie. The couple raised their family in the Missouri towns of Elkhorn, Lawson, Excelsior Springs and Kearney.

Clarence was in the building business for over 50 years. He was a businessman, builder and land developer. He was the owner and developer of King’s Suburban Estates in Excelsior Springs. He was a community leader, forming the future of Excelsior Springs as a city council member and mayor in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s. He served on the Excelsior Springs Hospital Board and was instrumental in the construction of the new hospital in 1974. Most recently, Clarence continued serving the community with roles on the Planning and Zoning Commission, the Clay County Development Commission and the Lions Club.

He and his family were members of the First Baptist Church in Excelsior Springs, where he served as an ordained deacon.

Clarence is survived by his daughters, June Hewitt and fiancé, Mark Gaugh, Kearney, Jill Hilke and husband, Patrick, Kansas City, and Joy King Fahrmeier and husband, Jeremy, Kearney. He is also survived by three grandchildren, who brought much joy to his life, Ryan Hewitt and his wife, Katie, Kansas City, Ryan Hilke, Kansas City, and Abigail Hilke, Kansas City. Clarence is also survived by a brother, Vernon King, Excelsior Springs. He also leaves behind his dog and best companion, Betsy.

Clarence was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence E. King, Sr. and Anna Clevenger King; and two brothers, Delbert King and Herbert King.

Relatives and friends can leave condolences at the Bross & Spidle Funeral Home, 217 W. Broadway, Excelsior Springs, where Clarence will be in state from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept 24, 2014.

Visitation will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25, 2014 with the funeral immediately following at 3 p.m. at Kearney First Baptist Church. Interment will be at Hillcrest Cemetery in Excelsior Springs immediately following the funeral.

Clarence battled chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), COPD, heart disease, congestive heart failure and type 2 diabetes with much pride and never gave up fighting his love for life while continuing building homes until his death. Like George Burns, Clarence never worked a day in his life, because he loved his job so much.

His family will greatly miss his love for his family, friends and most of all his love for building.

The family suggests donations to NorthCare Hospice.

Arrangements are through Bross & Spidle Funeral Home, Excelsior Springs.
