Dorothy Brown Plattenburg

Dorothy (Dottie) Brown Plattenburg passed away Wednesday, August 28, 2013, in her home surrounded by family. She was born in Richmond, Mo., to Carl Lynn and Dorothy (Hansen) Brown, who preceded her in death. Also preceding her in death was her husband of 38 years, H. Lee Plattenburg.

She is survived by her children, daughters, Cathy and husband, Doug Hoffman, of Rosemount, Minn., and Becky and husband, John Griffin, of Excelsior Springs, and son, Bill and his wife, Shae Plattenburg, of Liberty, Mo.; her siblings, brother, Donald L. Brown and fiancée, Bev Martin, of Ellenton, Fla., and sisters, Arlene Brown Schaefer of Branson, Mo., and Janette and husband, Ben Furman of Tonganoxie, Kans.; eight grandchildren, Jessica and her husband, Jonathan Block, Jordan Plattenburg, Josiah Plattenburg, Taelor Kirtley, Tyler Hoffman, Caitlin Hoffman, Nathan Hoffman, and expectant great-grandson, Creston Block; and numerous nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

She graduated from Raytown High School in 1956. She believed in higher education, and so attended and graduated from Trinity Lutheran Nursing School in 1959 in Kansas City, Mo. She completed her Bachelors in 1985 in Health Sciences from the University of St. Francis, Joliet, Ill., and a Masters of Vocation Education in 1995, from CMSU, Warrensburg, Mo.

She was an active member of several community organizations: for 46 years at Barbee Memorial Evangelical Church; Chapter CJ of the P.E.O. Sisterhood since 1968; Coterie Study Club, Beta Sigma Phi; Welcome Wagon; Sinawiks, the women’s auxiliary of Kiwanis; Trinity Lutheran Alumni Association; several craft and bridge clubs.

She worked 50 years as a nurse in the Kansas City and Excelsior Springs areas, and always tried to fit her work around her family’s schedule: Trinity Lutheran Hospital, head floor nurse; school nurse for Excelsior Springs School District (ESSD); In-service Director at Lafeyette Regional Health Center; an instructor in the LPN Program at Northland Career Center in Platte County; and Director of Student Health at William Jewell College.

She helped to organize the Excelsior Springs Hospital Auxilary to provide volunteers and financial support for services at the Excelsior Springs Hospital. Through her work as a school nurse in the ESSD, she saw a need for childhood immunizations in the community. Therefore, in conjunction with the Clay Co. Health Department and volunteers from Beta Sigma Phi, she helped organize the free clinic for well baby checkups, immunizations for children, and other health screenings in the Excelsior Springs community.

She wanted to extend a thank you and express her appreciation to her family for the care given over the last 7 months. She also extends a huge and grateful thanks, and appreciation to all of her friends, neighbors, classmates, church family, and P.E.O. sisters for the food, cards, visits, phone calls, and loving concern given by each person in the community. There are too many to list, but Dottie knows your heart and prayers have been with her. She also thanks her doctors, nurses, staff, and hospice care team for the care, treatment, and dignity she has been shown.

Memorial services for Dorothy will be 11 a.m. Saturday, September 7, 2013 at Barbee Memorial Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Excelsior Springs, Mo., with visitation from 9 to 11 a.m. prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Barbee Memorial Evangelical Presbyterian Church, P.E.O. Chapter CJ, or the Raytown High School Class of 1956 Scholarship Fund.
