Donald Sharp



Donald "Don" Duncan Sharp, 67, passed away peacefully December 26, 2013 at North Kansas City Hospital surrounded by his family.

Don was born August 13, 1946 in Excelsior Springs, Mo., to Frances Watson and George Leonard Sharp. He attended Excelsior Springs schools and graduated in 1964. He then attended Missouri University at Columbia. Don retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 30 years.

Don was an adventurous soul whose passion included golf, sailing, flying his airplane, and traveling. He recently served on the Excelsior Springs Airport Board, was past Commodore of the Paradise Point Yacht Club at Smithville Lake where he also taught many of their sailing classes. Don along with Kathy won the Missouri State Championship title for Catalina 22 Sailing Regatta. In 2010 Don also crewed with a team that won 3rd place in the prestigious Newport to Bermuda ocean race.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Kathy, of Excelsior Springs, Mo.; his daughter, Kim, of Kansas City, Mo., and three grandsons, Keegan, Logan and Trey; and son, Curtis, Los Angeles, Calif. He is also survived by two brothers, John Sharp, Atlanta, Ga., and Bill Sharp of Gladstone, Mo., as well as many nephews and nieces.

Besides his parents, he was preceeded in death by his two brothers, Leonard (Sonny) Sharp and Robert Sharp, and two nephews, Mark Sharp and David Sharp.

Private cremation. There will not be a visitation or funeral service. At his request, plans are being developed for a lakeside friends and family picnic that will take place later in the spring at Watkins Mill State Historic Park.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society. Donations can be mailed to Bross & Spidle Funeral Home, 217 W. Broadway, Excelsior Springs, Mo. 64024.
