Evalina Lucile Gustin

Evalina Lucile Gustin passed away October 5, 2015, in Plattsburg, Mo. She was born September 12, 1919, the daughter of Walter Dial and Georgia Fannie (Miller). She graduated from Hardtner High School and enrolled in the school of nursing at Independence Sanatarium and Hospital, in Independence, Mo. Afterward she worked in the mid 40s and early 50s as a nurse at Hardtner, Kans. and Cherokee, Okla. Her favorite floor in the hospital was the “O.B. Floor.” She loved babies.

She married James A. Mayhew about 1940. They became the parents of two girls, Georgia Marie and Virginia Sheryl. On July 5, 1947, Evalina married Oscar Gustin and they were blessed with a son, Gary “Buddy’’ Paul Gustin in 1948. In 1962, they adopted Joseph Paul Clare Gustin, the biological son of Virginia Sheryl.

Evalina and Oscar moved to a farm in Lambert, Oklao., with their daughters. From 1948 to the mid 1950s they worked two farms (their own and the neighbors). When the couple decided to pursue jobs in Wichita, Kans., the children, Georgia, Virginia and Gary Paul, lived a year in Hardtner with their Grandmother Georgia Dial prior to joining their parents.

Mr. and Mrs. Gustin both found work at Beech Aircraft in Wichita, Kans. Evalina's job was described as "Bucking Rivets.” It was a process used in the factory to assembled aircraft with rivets. Eventually, Evalina transfered to an office position within the Beech Aircraft Company. She was with them for thirty years.

After retiring from the aircraft company, both she and her husband worked part-time as bus drivers for the South Barber School District. They also continued to work on a home they owned in Hardtner.

When it came to the pleasures of life, there was so much she loved. She played the violin and sang, gardened, sewed, and cooked. She also loved to travel -- one time she took a long trip with her brother, Wayne, in his private plane. They visited landmarks and relatives across the United States. Most of all she enjoyed being with her children and grandchildren. The love she had for them and God was transparent. It came shining through in all she did, be it caring for them or teaching Sunday School.

Evalina always loved the company of numerous pets. Later in life there was her beloved dog "Muffin” and, finally, "Siam” a stray Siamese cat. At the home of her daughter and son-in-law, she enjoyed the company of their faithful dog “Rusty.”

Mrs. Gustin was preceded in death by Oscar, her husband for 45 years; her son, Gary (Buddy) Paul; parents, Walter and Georgia Dial; sister, Loretta; and four brothers, Russell Wayne, Amber, Willard, and Milton.

Survivors include 18 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; several great-great-great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and friends. Among Evalina’s long-time friends is a fine lady named Stella. She and Evalina were classmates at Hardtner High School.

Evalina lived 96 full and productive years. She will continue to live on in the hearts and minds of all who loved her.

Funeral services will be held at the Fry-Bross and Spidle Funeral Home in Kearney, Mo., on Thursday, October 8, 2015, at 1:00 p.m.
