George Koehler
George Koehler, 88, of Kearney, Mo., passed away Friday, February 28, 2014 at 8:30 p.m. at Liberty Hospital, Liberty, Mo. George was born October 8, 1925 in Kansas City, Mo., to George Koehler and Francis McCabe Schroer Koehler. George married Agnes Marie Borders on March 1, 1946.
George and Agnes moved to Kearney in 1962 living first on 92 Highway, moved to Ada Street, and then to Kearney Senior Citizens.
George was a truck driver for over 30 years before retiring. He then owned his own blade sharpening business and did many crafts. Many family and friends received these as gifts. He also drove a school bus for the Kearney School District and worked at Kramers Hardware in Kearney. George also worked for the City of Kearney as a building inspector in 1970's.
George was a member of the First Baptist Church, Kearney, Mo., where he was ordained as a deacon. He then served as a deacon at Northern Hills Baptist Church. Prior to moving to Kearney, George, Agnes and family were members of the Winnwood Baptist Church, Kansas City, Mo.
George will be missed by his family and the many friends he has made over the years. Everyone knew him for his stubbornness and strong opinions on things he really believed in. He was always there for the good times and the sad times. Besides doing his crafts, George enjoyed fishing, hunting and bowling. His biggest passion in the last several years was collecting quarters and making holders to display them. A passion some of his children and grandchildren enjoyed with him. George was well known, by family members to give a quarter to a little child when dining out at a restaurant. Before cell phones, he would remind his children to always carry a dime so they could make a pay phone call home when they were out with friends, if they couldn't make it home on time. If you didn't call he would meet you at the door and ask if you had a dime.
George was preceded in death by his parents, George and Francis Koehler; his wife, Agnes M. Borders Koehler; and 13 half brothers and sisters.
George is survived by his four children, Rose Ann Minnis (Victor) of Belton, Mo., Shirley Francis (Charles) of Plano, Texas, John Koehler (Debbie) of Kansas City, Mo., and David Koehler of Liberty, Mo.; six grandchildren, Tonya Olinde (Kelly), Tim Minnis (Tammy), Greg Koehler, Michael Koehler, Nicholas Koehler (Jana) and Hayley Shinneman (Michael) and eight great grandchildren, Dorian Famuliner, Derik and Dillon Olinde, Shelbi and Koby Minnis, Kaila Koehler, Makenna and Makenzie Koehler. He is also survived by one brother in law, James Borders (Alice) of Atlantic, Iowa, and several nephews and nieces.
Funeral service will be at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, March 6, 2014 at Fry-Bross & Spidle Funeral Home in Kearney, Mo., with visitation from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., prior to the service. Burial will follow service at White Chapel Cemetery in Gladstone Mo.
