Ida F. Eckersley

Ida Fern Eckersley, 89, a longtime resident of Excelsior Springs, Mo., died September 26, 2013 at the Convalescent Center of the Excelsior Springs Hospital.

Ida was born July 12, 1924 in Windsor, Mo., the daughter of James G. and Leota Hughes. At the age of five the family moved to Burr Oak, Kans., where she and her four younger brothers lived until graduating high school.

In the late 1940’s she met and married Clayton C. (Eck) Eckersley and moved to Kansas City, Mo. Clayton had one son and Ida had twin boys. They moved to the Excelsior Springs area in the 50’s and had three more sons. Ida worked at home raising her sons until her husband’s death in 1966, after which she moved into town and lived on Foley Street until 2010. She worked several jobs around town including the Excelsior Springs School District, A & W Drive-in, and Pizza Pub. She also babysat for many children, but the job she liked best was working at the Job Corps Center teaching sewing, crafts and other things. Ida was an avid ESHS Tigers fan and a long time member of Siloam Springs Baptist Chapel.

Ida traveled all over the United States. She lived for a year in Matamoras, Mexico where she acquired Viernes (Spanish for Friday), a green parrot that would ride on her shoulder as she walked around town. Her hobbies included gardening, sewing, knitting, crocheting and working with her hands. She was always ready to help anyone she could and just enjoyed meeting and talking with people.

She is survived by four sons, Dan Eckersley of Excelsior Springs, Mo., Mike and Cindy Walden of Kansas City, Mo., Tom Eckersley of Polo, Mo., and Chris and Karen Eckersley of Chandler, Ariz. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and friends.

Ida was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Max, Bill, Fred and John Hughes; her husband, Clayton; sons, Benny Eckersley and John David Walden; John David’s children, Jay DeeAnn and Curtis; and her beloved parrot, Friday.

Memorial services will be Saturday, October 5, 2013 at Siloam Baptist Chapel, 438 Benton Street, Excelsior Springs, Mo. Visitation with the family will be from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., with the memorial service immediately following. In lieu of flowers the family requests you to give back to the Excelsior Springs community.

Ida will be dearly missed by family and friends.
