Iris Maurine Nicholson
Iris Maurine Nicholson, 90, of Kearney, Mo., passed away peacefully in her home Wednesday, April 3, 2013. She was the only daughter born to Wylie and Nena (Creason) Smith of Kearney, on July 10, 1922. She married Melvin Nicholson, of Birmingham, Mo., on October 17, 1942. They lived in Claycomo, Mo., where they raised two children, Melvin Lawrence (Larry) Nicholson and LeAnna (Nicholson) Neild, before moving to Kearney in 1981. Maurine and Melvin were married for 58 years.
Maurine attended Kearney schools. She worked in a factory during W.W.II making parts for planes, while her husband was serving in the military. She spent her life devoted to raising her children. She spent many years volunteering her time with the Liberty Hospital Auxiliary. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was an inspiration to many and touched the lives of countless others. Her faith, family, and community were the treasures of her life.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Wylie Carter Smith and Nena (Creason) Smith; husband, Melvin Nicholson; son, Larry Nicholson, and brothers, Stanley Smith and LeRoy Smith.
She is survived by her daughter, LeAnna (Nicholson) Neild of Liberty; grandchildren, Raschelle (George) Theoharis of Carlisle, Penn., Stephen (Cara) Nicholson of Kearney, Mo., Crystal Neild of Liberty, Mo., Amanda (Scott) Engelage of Platte City, Mo., and Andrew Neild (McKenzie Glennon) of Liberty, Mo.; great-grandchildren, Maxwell Theoharis, Grant Nicholson, Melaina Theoharis, Haden Neild, Cody Nicholson, Alison Engelage, Benjamin Neild, Jacob Nicholson, Alexander Engelage, and Amalia Theoharis.
Visitation for Maurine will be from 10 to 11 a.m. on April 6, 2013 at Fry-Bross & Spidle Funeral Home in Kearney, Mo. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, followed by burial at Fairview Cemetery in Kearney, Mo. Lunch and reminiscing to follow at The Old Firehouse.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the Old Firehouse in Kearney, Mo. Her family also invites those interested to join their team for the 2nd Annual Outpacing Melanoma 5K on May 5, 2013; Team Name: Maurine.
