Joseph E. Morgan
Joseph Eugene Morgan, 91, Excelsior Springs, Mo., died Thursday, May 26, 2011, peacefully at his home.
Mr. Morgan was born in Excelsior Springs, Mo., in 1920 and graduated from Excelsior Springs High School and moved back from Kansas City, Mo., in 1962. He was publisher of the Town & Country Leader, The Daily Standard and other Leader Publications. He sold the papers and retired in 1986.
He was in the advertising and printing business in Kansas City for 16 years. He was a member of the Advertising and Sales Executive Club, the Printing Executive’s Club, downtown Kiwanis member and past president of the Printing Sales Club.
In Excelsior Springs, he was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Rotary, Elks and American Legion. Mr. Morgan was selected as the Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year in 1979. He was on the board of the Northwest Missouri Press Association and a board member and past president of the Central Missouri Press Association. He helped to establish the Good Samaritan Center in 1986 and served on its board. In 2010, Joe served on the Excelsior Springs Plan Advisory Committee for the Excelsior Springs Comprehensive Plan.
He was an Eagle Scout and a member of the Tribe of Mic-O-Say. He attended William Jewell College, Western Illinois University and Central Missouri State University. He was a member of Phi Gamma Delta social fraternity. He was a naval aviator in World War II serving in the Aleutian Theatre.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Josephine, father, Thomas N. Morgan, wife and mother of his children, Patria, in 1978, his wife, Hazel Lee in 1985, grandson, Tommy in 1986, and great-grandson, Robert in 1997.
Survivors include: his wife, Shirley Morgan, of the home; sons, Patrick J. and his wife, Verna, Liberty, Mo., and Kevin Morgan and his wife, Sonya, Excelsior Springs, Mo.; daughters, Shannon Morgan, Excelsior Springs, Mo., Jill Clark and her husband, John, DeLand, Fla., and Molly Roberts and her husband, Charlie, Warsaw, Mo.; step-sons, Stephen McGinness, Branson, Mo., and Brian McGinness, Kansas City, Mo.; nine grandchildren, Shanna Pettegrew and her husband, Bob, Ryan Morgan and his wife, Nicky, Melody Martin, Megan Gantt and her husband, Robert, Patria Slaughter and her husband, Chip, Jenny Williams and her husband, Trey, Ryan Hawkins, Courtney Cole and her husband, Jason, and Joseph P. Morgan; 14 great-grandchildren, Patrick and Dylan Pettegrew, Remica, Raven, Ramsey, and Rakai Gantt, Rion and Ellah Hawkins, Aubrey and Rylan Slaughter, Kai, Morgan and Ireland Williams, and Mackenzie Cole; and special friends, Doris Lukens and Kent Barnhart.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, June 1, at St. Ann Catholic Church in Excelsior Springs, Mo.; burial in Crown Hill Cemetery. A Rosary will be said at 7 p.m., Tuesday, May 31, at St. Ann Catholic Church, with a visitation immediately following until 9 p.m. Arrangements are under the direction of Bross & Spidle Funeral Home, Excelsior Springs, Mo.
