John David Rice
John David Rice, 82, of Kearney, Mo., passed away on June 3, 2013. He was born May 5, 1931, the son of George and Vera Rice in Crystal City, Texas. He graduated from Texas A & M in 1953 with a degree in architecture. After serving two years in the United States Army, David enrolled in the Southwestern Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. While in seminary he met his wife, Donna Dean, and they were married in 1958. David served as a pastor of churches in Michigan and Mississippi.
In 1963 he began working on his Doctorate in Ancient Greek and Roman history. He completed this degree in Columbia, Mo., at Missouri University. David loved teaching and spent the next thirty years fulfilling his calling at William Jewell College, Liberty, Mo. and Kansas Wesleyan in Salina, Kans., as well as some part time teaching in local community colleges.
David made good use of his architectural degree throughout his life time, designing and supervising the building of two churches in Mississippi, and drawing plans for friends and family all his life.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Donna; three sons, Mark (Vickie) Rice of Livingston, Texas, Kevin (Stacy) Rice of Alameda, Calif., and Chris (Eve) Rice of Millersville, Md.; and daughter, Kathleen (Doug) Grimm of St. Louis, Mo. David loved his six grandchildren, Natalie, Hannah, Andrei, Noah, Drew and Emma and he was looking forward to number seven on the way.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, June 8, 2013 at Fry-Bross & Spidle Funeral Home in Kearney, Mo., with visitation from 1 to 2 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery, Kearney, Mo. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to Liberty Hospital Hospice.
