Karl Shelor

Karl Richard Shelor, 78, Excelsior Springs, Mo., passed away peacefully surrounded by the ones he laughed with, lived for, and loved on September 19, 2013. He was born on February 18, 1935 to John and Ethel Shelor in Advance, Ark. Karl married Mary Still on December 7, 1957 in Kansas City, Mo.

Karl worked many years in construction, retiring from JE Dunn. He also worked at RiteMade. He used his skills assisting to construct the former TWA overhaul base, Worlds of Fun, Royals stadium, many jobs on the Plaza, other small jobs within the Excelsior Springs community and his Lake of the Ozark community of Venture Valley. He valued the people he worked with and for, which developed into long lasting close friends.

Karl was an avid fisherman, mushroom hunter, and loved camping with family and friends. He had a wonderful sence of humor with his own musical talents. He was also a deacon within the Church of God located in Excelsior Springs, Mo. He was a loving father, husband, and grandfather and will be missed by many.

Karl is surved by his wife of 55 years and 9 months, Mary; sons, John (Amy) of Ozark, Mo., and Jeff (Chris) of Hoisington, Kans.; daughters, Terry (Frank) Tate of Liberty, Carla (Bryan) Young, Gail Hawking, and Jennifer (Mike) Snelling, all of Excelsior Springs; 20 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; brothers, Bill (Marcia) Shelor of Indianapolis, Ind., Larry Shelor of Kansas City, Mo., and sister, Doris (Rudolph) Hurst of Independence, Mo.; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

He was predeceased by dearly loved daughter, Shelly, who tragically died in a car accident in 1989. He was also preceded by his brothers, Gene, Jim, and Steve Shelor, and two sisters, Corrine Hurst and Virginia Lewis.

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the members of Hospice and Valley Manor Nursing Center. Their dedication and caring efforts to provide quality care provided a heartwarming blessing to the entire family. We thank God for the gift of his life and the blessing of the time we spent with him.

His funeral service will be held honoring Karl at 11 a.m. Monday, September 23, 2013 at Bross & Spidle Funeral Home, Excelsior Springs, with visitation from 10 to 11 a.m. prior. Pastor Emily Danner will officiate. Burial will follow at Crown Hill Cemetery.
