Larkie Isabelle (Fry) Shull

Larkie Isabelle (Fry) Shull, Excelsior Springs, Mo., passed away on May 7, 2015 at home. Larkie was born to Charles Edgar and Cora May Fry in Houston, Mo., on August 7, 1918.

Larkie attended seven different schools in Missouri, Oklahoma, and Kansas while she was growing up. She was a 1937 graduate of Pattonsburg, Mo., High School. On December 10, 1940, she was united in marriage to Lester Gayle Shull from Hale, Mo., and to this union five children were born. Larkie and Gayle were married nearly 64 years.

Larkie joined the Trinity Baptist Church in Chanute, Kans., in 1932. She was an active church member all of her life and was a member of Pisgah Baptist Church in Excelsior Springs at the time of her death. Larkie was a devout Christian and praying woman so it seems appropriate she passed away on the National Day of Prayer. Larkie was a Christian woman who is loved and will be missed by all.

Larkie worked in Kansas City at Pratt Whitney Company making aircraft engines during W.W.II while Gayle was in the service. They then lived and farmed in Hale, Mo., until the early 1960’s when they moved to Excelsior Springs, Mo. Larkie worked at Whitaker Cable and The Band Box dress shop. Larkie was an avid quilter and enjoyed many afternoons quilting with her friends at Pisgah Baptist Church. She also enjoyed painting, crafts, and gardening. Larkie was quick to respond to family, neighbors, and friends anytime there was crisis, illness, or death in the family. A delicious home baked pie and lots of love was on the way regardless of the time of day.

Larkie was preceded in death by her husband, Gayle Shull; her parents; one son, Norman Dale Shull; two brothers, Vernon Henry Fry and James Clovis Fry; and three sisters, Jewell Elizabeth Fry, Birdeen May Frock, and Betty Rose Pfalmer.

Larkie is survived by two sisters, Lenora Irene Taylor of Omaha, Neb., and Shirley Ann Scarafiotti of Santa Fe, N.M.; sons, Noel J. Shull (Peggy) of Kansas City, Mo., and Norton Keith Shull (Jane) of Glenaire, Mo.; and her daughters, Nedra Gail Baird (Bill), and Norma Jean Thomas (Dave Duncan), both of Excelsior Springs, Mo. Larkie is also survived by a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great-grandchildren.

Visitation is scheduled from 10 to 11 a.m. on Monday, May 11, 2015 at Bross & Spidle Funeral Home, 217 W. Broadway, Excelsior Springs, Mo., with funeral at 11 a.m. Interment at Hillcrest Cemetery following the service.

Memorial contributions may be made to Pisgah Baptist Church.
