May Marie Samuelson Perry

Beloved mother and grandmother, May Marie Samuelson Perry passed away on April 5, 2014 in Kansas City, Mo. May was born in Republic County near Courtland, Kans., to farmers Gus and Elsie Samuelson. She spent her elementary years at Lawrence School and attended Courtland and Scandia high schools.

May married Guy Perry in 1938 in Mankato, Kans. The young couple migrated west and worked on farms in Boise, Idaho, to survive the Great Depression before moving to Salina, Kans., where they resided for two years. Then they moved to Derby, Colo., so that Guy could work as a truck driver for P.I.E. Next, Guy’s job took the family to St. Charles, Mo., where they were members of the First Methodist Church and May worked in food service for St. Charles Schools. Then the family moved to Kansas City, Mo., in 1975. There May worked until retirement at Putche’s Cafeteria at Metro North Mall.

Guy and May retired in Holt, Mo., where they refinished antiques and attended auctions when they were not RVing with the 109 Holiday Rambler Club. They were also avid members of the Teamster’s Retirement Club. May attended Holt First United Methodist Church and was a member of their birthday club for many years as well. She spent retirement among her greatest loves -- family, friends, quilting, and gardening.

May was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers and two sisters, and her life partner, Guy of 54 years.

She leaves her children, Eddie (Annette) Perry of Olathe, Kans., Sheila Armstrong of Hillsboro, Mo., and Sybil (Ron) Schweighauser of Liberty, Mo.; five grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and many dear friends.

A visitation will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 8, 2014 at Fry-Bross & Spidle Funeral Home, Kearney, Mo. A celebration in honor of May’s life will be held at 12 p.m. Wednesday, April 9, 2014, with visitation from 11:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. prior to services at Courtland United Methodist Church in Courtland, Kans. Burial will follow at Courtland Cemetery.

May would be honored to have donations in her name sent to Holt United Methodist Church, 130 West Church St., Holt, MO 64048
