Paul Edwin Raulie, 86, Excelsior Springs, Mo., died Thursday, May 14, 2015 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, Mo.
He was born December 11, 1928, in Fairmount, Mo., the son of Ralph and Irene (Gladbach) Raulie. He married Marcella Ann Slattery on September 29, 1948 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Mount Leonard, Mo. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his daughter, Patricia.
Survivors include his wife, Marcella, of the home; four sons, Mike (Debbie) of Colorado Springs, Co.; Ralph “Ed” (Julia) of Akron, Oh.; Larry (Lee Ann) of Evergreen, Co., and Robert (Wendi) of Gladstone, Mo.; two daughters, Roselyn (Steve) Cohoon, Excelsior Springs, and Nicole (Mark) Riegel, Excelsior Springs; 21 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
Paul served in the Army-Air Corps as an Equipment Operator and Company Clerk in Frances E. Warren Air Force Base in Cheyenne, Wyo., from 1946-1949.
After leaving the military, Paul attended Chillicothe Business College, studying accounting. He held a number of jobs, most notably with N.W. Electric Power Co-Op in Missouri City and Cameron, Mo. from 1953-1979. He was then employed by the City of Independence at the Missouri City Power Station, again retiring in 1991.
Paul was extremely active in youth organizations. He began as Assistant Scoutmaster with Boy Scout Troop 309 from 1966-1969 and served as Scoutmaster from 1969-1980. He completed Wood Badge training in 1970. Every year, Paul attended H. Roe Bartle Scout Camp and was part of the Tribe of Mic-O-Say, elevated to the rank of Sachem in the Broken Arrow District of the Heart of America Council. His tribal name was “Sharp Flashing Lightning”.
Paul served on the Board of Directors of the Earnest Shepherd Memorial Youth Center in Liberty, Mo., from 1981 to present. As a member of the board, he oversaw Eagle Scout projects – supervising nearly 100 projects in that time. He also served on the property committee – sharing his expertise in building projects and renovations. His efforts impacted the lives of thousands upon thousands of youth.
He took great pride in serving his parish as a Eucharistic minister, taking Communion to and visiting the sick. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus St. Jude Council #6215 beginning in 1987. He was the past Financial Secretary for the local council and a member of the 4th Degree Knights, Assembly #2075 since 1996.
Paul was a craftsman, building furniture and cabinetry, upholstering furniture – including the altar on which Mass is celebrated today. He was a homebuilder, together with his wife and children, building the family home in which they still reside, from the ground up.
Paul had a great love for family, he was a man of conviction, always willing to help anyone in need. He was a perfectionist. If something was worth doing, it was worth doing right. Not everyone always agreed with Paul, but his heart was always in the right place – and he knew he was right!
