Shirley Tyra
Shirley Tyra, 79, Excelsior Springs, Mo., passed away July 13, 2015.
Shirley was born September 12, 1935 to Brown Loe Pelfrey and Bertha Mae VanCleve in Kimberling, West Virginia. She was a coal miner’s daughter. The family moved to Mooseheart, Ill., in 1952 after her father passed. Her mother, Bertha, became a nurse and moved the family to Excelsior Springs.
Shirley worked many jobs, waitress, and seamstress at the Lane Sewing Factory in Excelsior Springs. In 1973 she became a barber. She bought Unger’s Barber Shop and renamed it Tyra’s Barber and Styling in 1976. She loved barbering and talking with her clients and lifting their spirits up. She was quite a jokester and loved making people laugh. She was a member of Excelsior Springs Baptist Church. One of Shirley’s greatest accomplishments was having 42 years of sobriety. Her world centered around the love she had for The Lord and her family.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Earlene Ruth Springer.
She is survived by her daughters, Linda Salisbury, Robin Tyra, and Lisa Godley; brothers, Brown Loe “Brownie” Pelfrey, Jr., and Fayne Pelfrey; sister, Helen Geraldine Marlin; grandchildren, Stephanie Hass, Stacey Winklebauer, Christina Standiford, and Alex Godley; and great grandchildren, McKinlie, Bryce, Justiss and Raliegh.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m., Thursday, July 16, 2015 at Bross & Spidle Funeral Home, 217 W. Broadway, Excelsior Springs, Mo. Graveside service will be held 10 a.m., Friday, July 17, 2015 at Hillcrest Cemetery, Excelsior Springs, Mo. The family suggest contributions to the Excelsior Springs Baptist Church in lieu of flowers.
