Theda Fern McDowell
Theda Fern McDowell of Liberty, Mo., passed away April 24, 2013. Theda was born October 18, 1921 in rural Clay County to William and Josephine McFadden Beckett. Theda graduated from Smithville High School in 1939 and St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing in 1943. She worked as a Nurse at the Medical Plaza Building in downtown Kansas City, Mo., until 1951. In 1951 she married Richard McDowell and moved to their current address in 1953.
Besides nursing, Theda was a loving wife, mother and homemaker for her husband and four children. She loved working on the farm, raising many farm animals for the remainder of her life. Besides enjoying life on the farm, Theda was a fabulous cook and was always trying out new recipes. At Christmas time, she was well known for her homemade peanut brittle. Theda was a member of the Platte Clay Electric Pathfinders for many years and volunteered at the Westbrook Residential Care Center for 13 years. She was also a proud member of Providence Baptist Church .
Theda was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
Survivors include daughters Sara and Bud Duncan of Blue Springs, Mo., Debra and Steve Ames of Florence, Ala., and sons, David McDowell of Liberty, Mo., and Rick McDowell of Liberty, Mo. She is also survived by four grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Memorial services for Theda will be 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 4, 2013 at Providence Baptist Church in Liberty, Mo., with visitation from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to service. Burial will follow in church’s cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Carillon Memorial Fund at the church.
