Virginia "Gin" Marie Baxter
April 11, 1932 - March 9, 2014

Virginia Marie Baxter passed away Sunday, March 9, 2014. She was born to Kearn and Vallie (Seek) White on April 11, 1932.

Gin grew up in Winston, Mo., where she sang in the high school choir and played volleyball before graduating. As an adult, Gin worked in a bank in St. Joseph before her dream of becoming a mother was realized. She was very active as a room mother, teaching GA's (Girls in Action), BYW (Baptist Young Women) and in many Vacation Bible schools. Gin had a green thumb with lots of house plants and a huge garden each year. Gin lived her life in service to God and others. She had been an active member of the First Baptist Church of Stewartsville Mo., and Flack Memorial in Excelsior Springs, Mo.

Prior to adopting Vallie and Charles, she served as a long term foster parent. Gin was a faithful and protective guardian of her older brother, Bud, helping him work at the sheltered workshop to maintain as much independence that he could. When his health forced him to be moved into the Cameron nursing home, Gin made sure that he was taken care of and she visited frequently.

In the summer of 1991 a man walked through Gin's front door. He just stood there smiling. After a few moments and a long stare, Gin recognized her high school boyfriend, JC. That winter they were married in the middle of an ice storm, but their love for each other and their newly combined family kept everyone warm. They were able to walk through their retirement years together hand in hand. They traveled to New York to visit Mary and Frank, to Arizona to see Gin's best friend from high school and several trips to Branson. Grandma Gin had great pride in her grandchildren's accomplishments and attended many graduations, weddings and the births of many new family members. When a stranger walked through her door, they were instantly welcomed into her home. Many precious and cherished memories were made at Grandma Gin's wonderful dinners.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, JC Fuston; her second husband, Jewell Barlow; sister, Thelma Hibbs; brothers, Don White and John (Bud) White; son Gerald Baxter; grandson, Charles Barlow; and granddaughter, Holly Guillory.

She is survived by her husband, JC Baxter, of the home; sister, Mary (Frank) Gewickey of Wappinger Falls, N.Y.; her son with fur, Beauregard of the home; sons, Charles Barlow of Gallatin, Michael (Helen) Baxter of Blue Springs, Gene (Alyssa) Baxter of Kansas City, Mitchell (Sheri) Baxter of Kansas City, and Gene Baxter II of Independence; daughters, Vallie (Earl) Guillory of Independence, Jacqueline Baxter of Kansas, Michelle Hennigh of Independence, and Joell (Robert) Hampton of Independence; daughter-in-law Terry Baxter of Arizona; 29 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and extended family and friends.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. March 12, 2014 at Bross & Spidle Funeral Home, Excelsior Springs, Mo. Service will be held at 11 a.m. March 13, 2014 at Flack Memorial Church, Excelsior Springs, Mo., with burial to follow at 2 p.m. in Winston, Mo.
