Geneva Shelton

Geneva (O’Dell) Shelton, 90, a longtime resident of Excelsior Springs, passed away Tuesday, July 6, 2021, after a short stay at Liberty Hospital. Geneva was born July 7, 1930 in Ethel, Missouri, to Ollie and Mattie (Black) Cohoon.

On July 13, 1948, Geneva married her high school sweetheart, Billy Gene O’Dell. To this union three boys were born, Mike, who passed away in 2004, Rusty and Terry. Billy preceded her in death on November 8, 1958.

On September 10, 1962, Geneva married her best friend, Bobbie Dean Shelton, of Excelsior Springs. Bobbie had three children; Tim, Tamhra and Kevin. Geneva and Bob added three more children to their family; Robert, Ellen and Larissa, for a total of nine children. Bobbie preceded her in death on May 28, 2020, not quite four months short of their 58 year wedding anniversary.

Geneva was a faithful follower of Christ and attended church regularly. She was a member of Woods Memorial Christian Church in Excelsior Springs. She was an avid member of Christian Women’s Club and attended numerous prayer breakfasts and coffees every chance she could. Geneva loved going for long rides in the country with Bob and stopping for ice cream at Dairy B.

For a short time Geneva worked at Sears and Roebuck in Kansas City, Missouri, but her favorite and most fulfilling job was being a housewife, mother and grandmother to her loving family. Even though she never drove a vehicle, she also found time to sell Avon and enjoyed spending time visiting her customers as well as going to sales meetings.

Geneva was preceded in death by her parents, her two sisters and three brothers.

She is survived by five sons, three daughters, 15 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and an adorable great-great grandson.

Visitation will be held at Woods Memorial Christian Church on 417 Concourse Ave. in Excelsior Springs, on Monday, July 12, 2021 from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. The funeral will follow immediately after. Internment is at Hillcrest Cemetery in Excelsior Springs.
