Velma Lou Garnett, also known to many as “Lou” or “Granny”, 90 years old, of Excelsior Springs, MO, passed away on March 4, 2025.

Velma was born on October 22, 1934, to parents Charley and Clara Dry and was one of eight children.

After graduating high school Velma married her love, James Garnett, and had three children. She was a devoted and loving wife and mother.

Velma lived her life as a beacon of light, always willing to share her warmth and love with everyone she met. Her journey on this earth was one marked by love, compassion, and unwavering faith in God. She asked for so little and gave so very much. Velma loved to travel, play cards, go to church and spend time with her family and friends. She enjoyed cooking, especially fried chicken, stuffed peppers, and was known for hosting a fish fry from the fish her husband, James, would catch.

Velma is survived by children, Dennis Garnett, Terry (Gary) Kilgore, and Linda Bowen; sister, Kay (Bob) Gordon; grandchildren, James (Tammy) Kilgore, Jennifer (Richard) Gillip, Tara (Kody) Gaines, James Brown, Stephanie Crabtree, and Robert Bowen; along with many great and great-great grandchildren.

She is proceeded in death by parents, Charley and Clara Dry; husband, James Garnett; siblings, Lorene Kendall, Margaret Onley, Francis Lavender, Bud Dry, Wayne Dry, and Jim Dry; and great-grandson, Tony Johnson.

Services will be held at Bross & Spidle Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs, MO, on Friday, March 14, 2025. Visitation will be held at 10:00 a.m. with a service to follow at 11:00 a.m.
