Our Sincere Condolences
I first met Carl at Northwestern Engineering in Rapid City. He and his father were painting a logo on a trailer. We became fast friends with similar interests in cars. We both built "hot rods". Spending evenings and weekends working on the "rods", then driving them around. Carl, the elder taught son Carl, and Dick well. When I came back from Vietnam with a wife of fifty years and a daughter, I was intrdouced to Carl's lovely wife, Lynda. I've been blessed to know the Kurtz family. Thank you for all the good times and memories that I will treasure forever.
Your friend, Jack
I wanted to send my thoughts and prayers to the Kurtz family. Carl meant so much to all who learned from him or worked with him and I am so sorry and heartbroken for your loss.

I never had Carl as a Professor but knew him as a friend. He was a gentle soul who left us too soon. We will all miss him. Celebrate his life. Thank you.

What an honor I had to work with Carl for the past 10 yrs. He always had a smile on his face, and was a real groovy guy. He will truly be missed in Foundations.
Much love and respect, Crystal
Carl taught me for just a few short but intense weeks in "Cameraless Photography," in 1977. He transformed me. I learned that one can speak clearly about visual phenomena, dissecting and analyzing nascent artworks with absolute precision and acuity, because this is what Carl did. In the studio, he was all business, but in the cafe, he was warm and ingratiating. The B I received in his class taught me a great lesson - to keep pushing harder. I will always be deeply indebted to Carl Kurtz.

One of the most amazing, creative, caring, sharing, loving individuals I've known. We will all miss his influence, his professionalism, his presence and his heart.

I remember Carl well, my family and his family grew up together. We used to go to the farm house and spend many a summer being together and having a wonderful time hanging out in the back yard eating and playing. His daughter and I grew together through those family partys and I will always feel lucky to have had him in my life.
