Robert Edward Sanders
June 3, 1947 - March 22, 2014
Robert Edward Sanders, 66, of Excelsior Springs, Mo., passed away March 22, 2014.
Robert was born in Sedalia, Mo., on June 3, 1947, the son of Mary Elizabeth and Cloyd Sanders. He graduated from Marshall High School in 1965, Missouri Valley College in 1969 and received his Master’s degree in Education from Central Missouri State University. He married Neta Grace Halsey June 8, 1969.
Robert began his educational career in August 1969 in the Excelsior Springs School District. Over the next 19 years he served that district as math teacher and coach, Assistant Principal at Lewis Middle School, Principal at East High School and Assistant Superintendant for Business.
Shortly after beginning his educational career, he was drafted into the Army in the summer of 1970 and served as Fire Direction Control Specialist for the Artillery. He served a tour of duty in South Korea. He returned to teaching in the Excelsior Springs School District in January, 1972.
Robert joined Opaa! Food Management in November, 1988 as their Executive Vice President and oversaw the growth of the company until his semi-retirement in 2010. He was presented the “Whatever It Takes Award” in 2004 and a Lifetime Achievement Award from Opaa! in 2011. He retired from Opaa! in 2013.
Robert served as a member of the Missouri Association of School Business Officials for 24 years.
He was a member of Barbee Memorial Presbyterian Church and served as both Deacon and Elder of the church. He belonged to the Optimist and Lions Clubs of Excelsior Springs and served in various officer capacities with both. He served the City of Excelsior Springs on the Safety Sales Tax Oversight commission. He was also a long time member of the Excelsior Springs Golf Club.
Robert was preceded in death by his father, Cloyd Sanders, and sister, Nancy Gail Duey.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Neta Sanders, mother, Mary Elizabeth Sanders, daughters, Leslie Leonhard and Jennifer Kronewitter, his three grandsons, Jacob, Cade and Colin Leonhard, and son’s-in-law, Chris Leonhard and Jason Kronewitter.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 25, 2014 at Barbee Memorial Presbyterian Church in Excelsior Springs. Visitation will be 12 to 2 p.m. prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Barbee Memorial Presbyterian Church or the American Cancer Society.
Arrangements are through Bross & Spidle Funeral Home, Excelsior Springs.
